ABINGTON, Mass. -- One of the two Abington fire houses closed Monday leaving only one fire house in town
Response times will now take longer, but the fire chief says the department is simply out of options.
"We're the tip of the iceberg. I don't want to say that we're sounding an alarm from this station that these budget cuts are here, but this is the reality," said Capt. John Nuttall, of the Abington Fire Dept.
Engine 2 and Ambulance 3 will have to be kept at the main fire station. Only two trucks will respond to a fire rather than four and on some days only four firemen will be at the station house.
Abington fire officials say response time will be impacted, especially in the southern and western parts of town. It could take four minutes longer to get to an emergency.
For the chief, closing Station 2 was the best of a bunch of bad options. No one is being laid off, but cutting overtime means being short staffed.
"It jeopardizes the safety of the citizens of the town, and the firefighters that are here working," said Chief Arthur Pelland, of the Abington Fire Department.
Voters in Abington decided against a Proposition 2 1/2 override this summer. Residents are hurting and do not want higher bills.
"I'm facing a $2,000 car repair bill myself, and I don't know where the money is going to come from," Dave Maxwell, who voted against the override
Others know what is at stake.
"I have a mother-in-law that needs medical help every once in a while, so yeah a couple of bucks here and there, it's worth saving somebody's life," said Michael Sullivan, who voted for the override.
Fire officials said that while they don't know of any other departments in the area closing, they do not think this will be the only one.
"We're able to bail out Wall Street, but we're closing fire stations on Rockland Street in small town America. It's just very frustrating," Nuttall said.
