Fire substation closure will increase response times to south Abington-ENTERPRISE
Wed. Nov 18th 2009

By Allan Stein ENTERPRISE CORRESPONDENT Posted Nov 18, 2009 @ 03:18 AM ABINGTON — South Abington residents can expect fire and medical emergency response to take an additional 4 to 8 minutes because of the closing of the fire substation in that part of town, Fire Chief Arthur H. Pelland said. Station 2 on Rockland Street was closed down Monday because of budget cuts that reduced a five-person shift to four. ?This is going to create problems with delayed response. This is a terrible thing. It endangers the residents of the town and it endangers the firefighters,? Pelland said. The department’s $2.2 million level-funded operating budget represents a $159,000, or 7 percent, reduction voted at town meeting. Other departments are also dealing with budget cuts and a $1.1 million revenue shortfall. Pelland said he hopes to receive good news about the department’s application for a state stimulus grant. It would restore the four fire dispatchers and firefighter position lost this year to budget cuts. The department employs 19 full-time firefighters, the chief and deputy fire chief. Pelland said firefighter morale has been low but the substation closing made matters worse. ?Morale here is terrible. They have been asked to have an increased workload with less people (per shift). It is putting a lot of stress on everybody,? Pelland said. Fire Capt. John Nuttall, head of the firefighters union, said Monday’s substation closure ?wasn’t a great day for us. The firefighters agree with the chief that there is really no way around it.? The substation will now be used as a department warehouse. An ambulance and fire engine will be relocated to the main station, he said. Selectmen Chairman Thomas Corbett said the board will discuss the closure at Monday’s meeting.
